Ristorante Abruzzi, Rome, Italy


We discovered Ristorante Abruzzi on via del Vaccaro in Rome, while wandering away from the main stretch of shops by Trevi Fountain. This is a truly authentic, family owned restaurant with Abruzzi heritage, still standing from 1969 and passed on from father to daughter and son. A classic Trattoria; unassuming and unpretentious, and judging by the fact that there were no tourists to be seen, we knew we were in for a treat.

Sitting next to us was a charming man and his two dogs; a regular at Ristorante Abruzzi who has lived in an apartment above the restaurant for many years. He recommended we order the house red (delightful, by the way) with two classic pasta dishes; Amatriciana and Carbonara. We chatted to him about our love for the enchanting city and cuisine of Rome. Having Italian roots myself, the cuisine here really resonates with me. Throughout my childhood my family have always cooked many traditional Italian dishes; Pasta Al Forno, Aranchini and Tiramisu to name a few of my favourites, all so generous in flavor and character. In fact I’m still trying to steal the recipes from my rather hesitant Nonna, she likes to keep the secret to perfect Italian cooking as an enticement for us to visit her (not necessary, I assure you..).

The Amatriciana with a hearty red sauce, sausage and a touch of fresh parmesan, tasted like Nonna’s Sunday night pasta – fantastically simply and delicious. The traditional Carbonara was to die for; a delicately rich sauce, peppery and silky with crispy strips of pancetta – you could really taste the quality of the pancetta, fresh locally sourced produce.

My partner and I had such a lovely night, we brought my parents back a few nights later – they were equally as impressed as we were. The staff were lovely and my very Italian father had a good laugh with the owner, Marco, who left us with a bottle of Limoncello to help ourselves at the end of our meal, a dangerous temptation but..When in Rome!

A very affordable, quaint family restaurant with impressive traditional Roman dishes with an Abruzzi twist – not to be missed if you are visiting Rome! 9/10.
