Prevent Ageing Skin Without Plastic Surgery

In today's modern age, we are surrounded by the unrealistic expectations of beauty and of course, the never ending quest to stay youthful and young. This, coming from a 25 year old may seem ironic however at my age, the very beginnings of fine lines and wrinkles start to show. In my generation we certainly do feel the pressure to have that perfect instagram-worthy skin, but again, this is an ideal set by woman who are full of botox and fillers (thanks, Kim K). It's personally not my thing, so here are my tips on what I practice to stay healthy and glowing the au-natural way.

Less Junk, More Vitamins

Did you know you can literally eat your way to fabulous skin? Eating the correct balance of foods will feed your skin vital nutrients it needs to help it stay soft, supple and blemish-free. Fruit and vegetables contain powerful antioxidants that help

to protect skin from the cellular damage caused by free radicals. Avocados for example contain healthy fats and vitamins C and E to keep skin plump, bright, and hydrated. Salmon, herring, and trout provide our skin with oils that lubricate cells and reduce inflammation. So many foods, so many benefits. And most importantly, cut down on the binge sessions as we all know high sugar diets can lead to acne prone skin. I need to tell myself that every night, while I watch back to back Real Housewives episodes.

Wear Sunscreen

At the time of Sex & The City, Carrie Bradshaw and the ladies made a point of sun tanning NOT being in fashion. Nowadays, everyone is so desperate for a golden tan they are willing to bake themselves like a jacket potato in a tanning bed! I can't even tell you how detrimental this is to your skin.Search 'leather handbag' in Google images and you're looking at your future. So if you are spending a day outside in the sun, not only does wearing sunscreen prevent cancer, but it also prevents wrinkles and signs of skin aging. Protecting yourself from sun damage will make you feel better now and later on. Wear minimum SPF 15 every day (higher if you're spending time in strong sun) to help prevent skin cancer, wrinkles and sunburn.

Massage In Your Moisturizer

Daily moisturization is key to maintaining hydrated, healthy skin. Also, rather than dabbing on your face cream, use gentle pressure and massage it into your skin in a circular motion which will kick your circulation into high gear. Get into a routine of doing this every night before bed and you will wake up feeling fresh as a daisy. My partner NEVER moisturizes and I've been drilling him about this for a good two years. I finally forced him to moisturize his face before bed a couple of weeks ago and now hes addicted. He said it has literally changed his life!

Exercise gives your skin a healthy glow by increasing blood flow. A good workout doesn't just burn calories, it also helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to your skin. If you need even more convincing to book yourself into that body-pump class, when you sweat, it clears the body of toxins and removes dead skins cells so new ones can grow. Hooray for body pump!

Chill Out

High levels of tension can spike hormone production that leads to breakouts or aggravates conditions like psoriasis, so not only will you be stressed, you'll have zits too, uh oh. Promote stress relief and relaxation by organizing a spa day with the girlies. Or if you're time poor, simply preparing yourself a 10 minute bath, pop a couple of cucumber slices on your eyes (which, by the way, restricts blood vessels around the eye reducing swelling and puffiness) and light a couple of scented candles which will help give you that inner zen. Health and appearance are positively influenced by increasing your emotional and mental well-being so definitely give yourself some time out for R&R.

Get Hydrated

In this case, 'you are what you eat' or drink, rather, is certainly true. Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day is beyond important for your skin — hydration starts from the inside out. Even mild dehydration will cause your skin to look dry, tired and slightly grey. So if you're not fond of chugging on litres of plain water like yours truly, jazz it up a bit with fresh flavours like pieces of lemon and mint, or basil and strawberry, just tell yourself you're drinking an exotic cocktail.
